PSLE Science Keywords Your Child Must Know

Introduction

Here is a scenario many parents will recognise: your child reads a PSLE Science question, knows the answer, writes something down — and still loses marks. Not because they got it wrong, but because they used the wrong words.

PSLE Science marking schemes are keyword-driven. Examiners look for specific scientific terms in student answers. If your child writes around the concept but misses the exact keyword, marks are deducted — even if the understanding is clearly there.

Mastering PSLE Science keywords is one of the fastest ways to improve scores. Here is what your child needs to know.

Why Keywords Matter So Much in PSLE Science

PSLE Science questions — particularly open-ended and structured questions — are marked against a model answer that includes specific keywords. These keywords signal to the examiner that the student has understood the concept at the right level of scientific precision.

For example, saying ‘Photosynthesis is plants making food.’ is partially correct — but the model answer expects ‘Plants contains chlorophyll, with sunlight and carbon dioxide, photosynthesis takes place to produce oxygen and glucose.’ Every missing keyword is a potential mark lost.

Essential Keywords by Science Theme

Theme 1: Diversity
  • Vertebrate / Invertebrate
  • Flowering / Non-flowering plant
  • Characteristics / Adaptation
  • Classification / Group

Theme 2: Cycles
  • Life cycle / Stages of life cycle
  • Metamorphosis (complete / incomplete)
  • Water cycle — evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection
  • Matter — solid, liquid, gas / melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation

Theme 3: Systems
  • Digestive system — absorb, nutrients, digest
  • Circulatory system — transport, oxygen, carbon dioxide, blood vessels
  • Respiratory system — inhale, exhale, oxygen, carbon dioxide, lungs
  • Reproductive system — fertilisation, pollination, seed dispersal

Theme 4: Interactions
  • Food chain — producer, consumer, predator, prey
  • Food web — interconnected, energy flow
  • Adaptation — suited to environment, survive, reproduce
  • Photosynthesis — light energy, carbon dioxide, water, glucose, oxygen

Theme 5: Energy
  • Forms of energy — light, heat, sound, kinetic, potential
  • Energy conversion / transformation
  • Conductor / Insulator
  • Series circuit / Parallel circuit — current, resistance

How to Answer PSLE Science Questions Using Keywords

The PEEL method is widely recommended for open-ended Science answers:

  • Point — state your main answer using the correct keyword
  • Explain — explain how or why using scientific reasoning
  • Evidence — refer to information given in the question
  • Link — link back to the question asked

Teaching your child this structure, combined with keyword mastery, transforms their ability to score on open-ended questions.

How OutClass Academy Helps

At OutClass Academy, PSLE Science keyword training is built into every lesson. Our in-house handbooks include topic-by-topic keyword lists aligned with MOE’s marking scheme, and students practise using these keywords in structured answers from P3 onwards.

By P5 and P6, our students know not just what the keywords are — but how and when to use them in exam answers.

Ready to help your child succeed?

At OutClass Academy, our MOE-certified tutors specialise in helping Primary and Secondary students build confidence and improve their grades in Math and Science. With small classes of no more than 6 students and a proven, personalised approach, we have helped over 90% of our students improve by at least 3 grades.
